The History of Everett ~

In 1861, Europeans settled on the land of what is known as Everett.  The settlers were led by Dennis Brigham who claimed 160-acres and built a cabin on it; the land sat on Port Gardner Bay.  For several years few settlers came to the area, but in 1890 the town started to grow after the platting of the town.  The Everett Land Company was founded by Colgate Hoyt, Charles Colby and Henry Hewitt in 1890.  The company was created to build the city of Everett, which they named in honor of Charles Colby's son.  On May 4, 1893, Everett was incorporated; the Great Northern Railroad came through the town in that same year.  For a short while, Mr. Everett had hopes of the town becoming a terminus for the railroad, but James Hill continued the railroad on through the Puget Sound to Seattle instead of Everett and many had hoped  for traffic to come with the railroad.  Mines and railroads were very important to Everett's futureMonte Cristo was a mining community that depended on the railroad for supplies.  Everett was the melting place for ore before port activity and saw milling started. As the Yukon gold rush began, several steamboats were built in Everett.

Many of the Bellingham riot survivors settled in Everett; they were soon beaten and forced to flee the area in 1907 by an angry mob.  Also, in 1916, the Everett Massacre took place.  The massacre happened due to a conflict between IWW members and Sheriff Donald McRae.  Seeking to land the steamboat, the Verona, the IWW were denied the opportunity.  This led to a shooting in which two of the Sheriff's men were killed and five of the IWW's were killed.

The streets of Everett are named for the three founders of the area.  Hoyt Avenue and Colby Avenue are adjacent to one another and run from north to south, they are crossed by Hewitt Avenue which runs from east to west and lie south of the BNSF Railroad.
