While paddling a canoe and searching for timber in northern Seattle in 1890, logger George Brackett was hit by a gust of wind overturning his canoe and forcing Brackett to beach, this location is now known as "Brackett's Landing".  Brackett was the original founder of Edmonds and named the town after George Edmonds, the Vermont Senator.  The community started out as a homestead and logging operation in 1876.  In 1890, the town was incorporated as a city, and is the oldest incorporated city in the county.  In 1891, the Great Northern Railroad came to the area and gave access for passenger and goods travel for years.  Several fires destroyed most of the waterfront mills, but the production of shingle continued as the main industry on into the 1940s.

During the 1940s and 1950s the City continued to grow, this resulted in an active part of the government adding streets, sewer and water for the residential and commercial sectors.  In 1948, the port district was formed and many improvements to the waterfront began.  After the completion of Interstate 5 the growth to the Puget Sound, changes began and more emphasis was put into residential development.
Now the City is mostly a residential community providing several amenities for its residents.  The City has a lively arts and cultural sector that shows community pride.  There is an active involvement in the community, a great economic base and many well-kept neighborhoods.

A local landmark is the Edmonds fountain.  The fountain has been a popular spot for relaxing with the locals for decades.  You can find the fountain at 5th and  Main St.  in the center of the roundabout.  The fountain was originally built in 1970 with a whitewashed wooden gazebo covering it.  In 1998, the fountain was destroyed during a wreck, but was rebuilt in 1999.  A second car wreck destroyed the fountain again, it has been rebuilt in 2006 with steel rods for super reinforcement.
